About Reiki
Reiki (pronounced Ray-key) is a Japanese healing therapy. The word itself translates to ‘Universal Life Energy’.
Despite being based on ancient Buddhist teachings there is no belief system attached to Reiki. That means that anyone may receive a treatment.
History of Reiki
Reiki was developed in Japan in the 1920’s by Dr Mikao Usui. Dr. Usui reputably discovered this form of Ki or energy healing during a time of meditation and fasting on Mount Kurama in Japan. Reiki has since been passed down from master to student and onwards so that its practice is now popular all over the world.
The following principles form the basis of Dr Usui’s Reiki practice:
Just for today:
- Let go of anger
- Let go of worry
- Be glad
- Work with integrity
- Be kind to others
Benefits of Reiki
Reiki works where it is most needed so it can benefit the individual on the physical, emotional, mental or spiritual levels.
Reiki is useful in combating stress and any disorders exacerbated by anxiety or tension.
This form of healing is gentle and non-intrusive and is safe for even small babies and the elderly.
Reiki should never be used as a substitute for medical care but instead it works most effectively when used in conjunction with advice from doctors or trained professionals.
Preparing for a Treatment
We recommend that you wear comfortable clothing for your treatment. Include socks and long-sleeves, if possible, as your body temperature may drop during the treatment as you relax.
Please avoid eating heavily before the treatment. It can be harder to relax if your stomach is working on digesting a large meal.
It is advisable to avoid alcohol before and after a treatment. The alcohol may affect you more than usual and you could feel worse as the Reiki works to help your body flush out the toxins.
The Reiki Treatment
Treatments are performed on a therapy table with subdued lighting. Your comfort during a session is important so covers and pillows will be provided. There is no need to remove any clothes (except for shoes).
Before the treatment begins, you will be asked to fill in a short health questionnaire and asked to discuss what brought you for a treatment.
The practitioner will place her hands in a series of positions on or above the body. Part way through the session you will be asked to turn over. Some people feel warmth or a tingling sensation but everyone’s experience is different. You are most likely to feel relaxed and calm by the end of the treatment.
After a Treatment
Please try to make sure you drink enough water after a treatment. The body needs to replace the water it uses to flush out toxins. If you feel light-headed then we recommend that you do not drive until it passes – normally within 20 minutes. Walking or stamping your feet can help.
The effects of Reiki can sometimes be felt for days after a treatment. If you have any comments or questions then don’t hesitate to call.
